NetEase has severed its partnership with Jackalyptic Games, the North American studio formerly known as Jackalope Games, effective immediately. Jackalyptic, led by CEO Jack Emmert, had been collaborating with NetEase for nearly three and a half years. The news has been described as devastating for the studio, which was engaged in developing a Warhammer MMO that remains unreleased.
Studio Transition
Jack Emmert, known for his work on Champions Online and DC Universe Online, shared that the studio's collaboration with NetEase has ended. This marks a significant shift for Jackalyptic, leaving many of the studio's staff seeking new employment. Senior sound designer Ben Dahl noted the profound impact of NetEase's decision, as most of the studio's team now searches for new opportunities.
Strategic Shift for NetEase
This decision is part of NetEase's broader strategic retraction from overseas investments in MMOs, a sector requiring substantial financial resources and time. Jackalyptic joins other Western studios like Fantastic Pixel Castle, Bad Brain, and T-Minus Zero, which were dropped before completing any projects. NetEase's move signals pressures in prioritizing resources towards more immediate returns.
Market Implications
The termination of the collaboration suggests headwinds for smaller studios dependent on partnerships with larger companies. As NetEase adjusts its focus, the MMO genre faces a challenging landscape, adding complexity for developers aiming to compete against established games. This could lead to consolidation and reduced diversity in the gaming market.
