Darkwood 2, a sequel to the top-down survival horror classic, was announced at the Xbox Showcase and will be developed by Ice-Pick Lodge. The original Darkwood, released in 2017 by Acid Wizard Studio, is renowned for its eerie atmosphere and holds an 'overwhelmingly positive' rating from over 20,000 reviews.
Development and Collaboration
Ice-Pick Lodge, known for the Pathologic series, takes the helm for Darkwood 2. Although Acid Wizard Studio remains on hiatus, they will consult and retain ownership of the series. Co-founder Gustaw Stachaszewski expressed trust in Ice-Pick Lodge, citing their shared horror ethos and earlier influences.
New Setting and Features
Set on the desolate remains of the Aral Sea in the 1990s, Darkwood 2 introduces new lands and creatures amid a grim and corrupt forest environment. The game retains the series' signature open world, eschewing quest markers for a more immersive exploration experience. It will be available on Steam and the Microsoft Store, promising modern technology enhancements, with a release date to be announced.
