Microsoft has taken a decisive step to address a pressing issue that has been affecting users attempting to perform reset and recovery operations on their systems. The issue emerged following the installation of the August 2025 Windows security updates, impacting devices running Windows 10 and older versions of Windows 11. Among the affected editions are Windows 11 23H2, 22H2, Windows 10 22H2, Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021, IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021, and the 2019 versions of these editions.
Out-of-Band Update Solution
Recognizing the critical nature of the situation, Microsoft released an out-of-band cumulative update on August 19, 2025. This update offers a remedy for the known reset and recovery issues, guiding users to bypass problems that arise during reinstall attempts. Specifically, users aiming to keep their files, apps, and settings intact during these operations have been most affected.
Microsoft has advised that users who have not yet installed the earlier problematic August security updates should opt for the out-of-band update instead. This update supersedes previous versions and is deemed necessary only for those impacted by the issue at hand. If a system has remained unaffected, there is no requirement to install this out-of-band update.
Availability and Recommendations
The emergency updates are accessible as optional updates via Windows Update and Windows Update for Business. For manual installation, users can download the updates from the Microsoft Update Catalog. IT professionals working with the RemoteWipe configuration service provider have also been advised to consider these updates to prevent reset failures during remote operations.
In addressing other ancillary concerns, Microsoft has also implemented a Known Issue Rollback (KIR) fix. This resolves issues encountered when updates were installed from a network share using the Windows Update Standalone Installer (WUSA). Additionally, a previous glitch that resulted in failure of the August 2025 security updates on Windows 11 24H2 systems—when delivered through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)—has been addressed.
Through these proactive measures, Microsoft underscores its commitment to maintaining operational efficiency and user satisfaction across its platform, ensuring that both individual users and IT professionals can sidestep these temporary obstacles and enjoy seamless Windows recovery processes in the future.
