AMD’s latest innovation in the gaming world, FSR4, is poised to revolutionize image quality for PC gamers by offering a substantial upgrade over its predecessors. As AMD continues to expand its reach, the inclusion of FSR4 support for most FSR 3.1 and DX12-supported games extends its capabilities to 'over 85 games', according to the company.
With the release of the new Adrenalin Software driver, gamers can seamlessly enable FSR4 through a simple toggle mechanism over FSR 3.1. This function, however, relies heavily on having a game with a signed FSR 3.1 DLL. It’s noteworthy that third-party software isn't influenced by this feature, maintaining its independence.
Compatibility and Future Directions
The enhancement of image quality provided by FSR4, although compelling, comes with a caveat: the technology remains inaccessible for GPUs older than the latest offerings. While the capability hasn't been backported to RDNA 3 chipsets yet, rumors suggest that AMD is diligently working toward a solution to extend this upgrade.
Comparatively, while FSR4 makes significant strides over its own FSR 3 and even DLSS 3 in raising image quality and offering performance boosts—particularly for handheld devices and low-end systems—it still falls short in stacking up against Nvidia’s DLSS 4. The disparity not only lies in image quality but also in the sheer availability across gaming platforms.
