Build a Rocket Boy (Barb) faces significant internal challenges following the troubled launch of its game MindsEye in June 2025. The studio, led by former Grand Theft Auto producer Leslie Benzies, has been accused of mismanagement and a lack of clear direction.
Leadership and Management Issues
Former employees allege that there was no coherent vision for the game development process. Joknamed "Leslie tickets," Benzies's notes were reportedly prioritized over other input, and crucial feedback was largely ignored, according to ex-lead data analyst, Ben Newbon.
An atmosphere of pressure led to poor decisions and morale issues, as constant changes frustrated the team. During a July all-staff meeting, Benzies deflected blame to internal "saboteurs," surprising many employees.
Layoffs and IWGB Action
The aftermath of MindsEye's subpar reviews saw mass layoffs, with the Edinburgh studio particularly affected. Between 250 and 300 staff members were made redundant.
The Independent Workers of Great Britain (IWGB) Game Workers Branch has organized an open letter and announced legal proceedings, claiming that employees were belittled and manipulated. Barb has stated it managed the layoffs with "care and transparency," but criticism remains pervasive.
Future Roadmap
Barb plans to continue working on MindsEye, aiming to deliver the game experience it initially envisioned. It acknowledged the game's poor launch but declared that it remains committed to improving the product.
The path ahead for Build a Rocket Boy involves regaining trust and stabilizing its workforce. With pressure mounting from both legal and industry sides, the studio faces a crucial period in its development journey.
