Microsoft Rolling Out Windows 11 Version 25H2 for Device Security

15 Nov 2025

Microsoft has started automatically upgrading PCs running Windows 11 version 23H2 to version 25H2, as version 23H2 reached end of servicing. This move affects devices on Home and Pro editions, which stopped receiving security updates on 2025-11-11. Enterprise and Education editions, however, will continue to receive security updates until 2026-11-10.

Reasons for Automatic Upgrade

The automatic upgrade to version 25H2 aims to ensure that devices continue to receive important security updates and bug fixes. Many features of 25H2 match those in version 24H2, ensuring feature parity while maintaining security. Upgrades will occur unless a device is managed by an IT department or is ineligible due to older hardware.

Impact on Device Eligibility

Most PCs will successfully transition to Windows 11 25H2, but some older processors may not be eligible. Nonetheless, Microsoft explains these processors are generally outdated. Devices that are not upgraded will still function but will cease to receive any further security updates.

Options for Postponing Updates

Users cannot indefinitely cancel these updates, though they may adjust restart timings or postpone the process if not restricted by a managed IT setup. Immediate upgrade is recommended to reset the support clock: Home and Pro editions receive support for 24 months, and Enterprise for 36 months post-upgrade.
