Helldivers 2 has become the best-selling PlayStation first-party game on PC, according to a report by Alinea Analytics, with an estimated 12.7 million copies sold on Steam since its launch in February 2024.
Sales Performance Across Platforms
Alinea Analytics estimates that Helldivers 2 has sold a total of 20 million copies across all platforms. This includes approximately 12.6 million copies on Steam, 5.4 million on PS5, and 1.4 million on Xbox, with a significant portion of Xbox sales occurring in the first week.
Other PlayStation titles on Steam have also sold well, but not as strongly as Helldivers 2. Horizon Zero Dawn has sold roughly 4.5 million copies, God of War (2018) 4.2 million, Days Gone 3.4 million, and Marvel's Spider-Man 2.7 million. Combined, these five titles account for approximately 27.5 million units sold on Steam alone.
Market Trends and Revenue
The report underscores a shift in market dynamics, with newer releases selling at a slower rate than their predecessors. For instance, God of War (2018) outpaced God of War Ragnarok, selling two-and-a-half times faster over a comparable period of 427 days. Similarly, Horizon Forbidden West sold three times slower than Horizon Zero Dawn over 608 days. These insights suggest a potential waning interest in PlayStation ports on PC.
PlayStation's strategy in balancing PS5 sales with meeting PC player demand is crucial. The total sales from PlayStation-published games on Steam have reached about 43 million copies, generating roughly $1.5 billion in gross revenue, of which approximately $1.2 billion has been attributed to PlayStation, and $350 million to Valve.
Implications for PlayStation's Strategy
Industry leaders, including former SIE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida, have recognized the financial benefits of PC ports, likening them to "printing money." Former CEO Jim Ryan viewed ports as a logical step to expand audience reach and manage development costs, while former executive Shawn Layden highlighted the risk of exclusivity due to rising budgets.
Evidently, demand dynamics are shifting, influencing both release timing and platform strategy. PlayStation must carefully navigate these changes to maintain a strong market position across platforms.
