On September 5, 2025, Microsoft unveiled the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.5790, utilizing the Dev Channel to introduce new and improved features for Windows 11, version 25H2. This build showcases Microsoft's commitment to enhancing user experiences while addressing persistent issues.
Innovations in Copilot+ PCs
Among the most noteworthy updates is the introduction of fluid dictation in the Voice Access feature on Copilot+ PCs. This allows for a more efficient and intelligent voice-based dictation experience by seamlessly correcting grammar, punctuation, and filler words. The enhancement is powered by on-device small language models (SLMs) and is automatically enabled across English locales, except in secure fields such as password inputs.
Additionally, Microsoft's rollout of Windows Studio Effects now extends to a broader range of cameras. Users can enable these effects through the Bluetooth & devices section in Settings, providing enhanced visual capabilities for devices using Intel, AMD, or Snapdragon processors.
Gradual Rollouts and System Improvements
As part of Microsoft's strategy for this build, features are deployed via a controlled rollout process, giving users the ability to toggle them on within the Windows Update section of the Settings. Notable improvements include a new agent in Settings for French language users and dynamic on-hover actions integrated into File Explorer Home for those using a Microsoft account.
Microsoft has also addressed several issues affecting system performance. Fixes implemented in Build 26220 target increased lag experienced in File Explorer, taskbar, and browser windows, along with taskbar app preview misalignment issues. The update also resolves context menu toggling problems and a frustrating storage scan hang in Settings.
Challenges and Known Issues
Despite these advancements, there are ongoing challenges. Current known issues include investigation into bugchecks (green screens) occurring during hibernation, the appearance of empty Shared sections in File Explorer Home, and issues with GPU capture playback in PIX. Audio devices may show warning signs, requiring manual driver updates, and issues with Xbox controllers over Bluetooth are under review.
Microsoft advises Insiders that this Dev Channel build relies on Windows 11, version 25H2. As features may be altered or retracted based on feedback, Microsoft encourages detailed reports via the Feedback Hub, particularly for localization and accessibility concerns.
