The recent update from Grinding Gear Games, known as the Third Edict, ushers in a significant transformation in PoE 2's endgame experience. This version, 0.3.1, streamlines the Atlas progression and adjusts the intricacies of map mechanics.
Endgame and Atlas Progression
Modifications to the endgame have removed the necessity of using towers for spreading modifiers, a change that simplifies the pathway for players. With a set number of uses, precursor tablets now allow the insertion of up to three modifiers. Once applied, each zone generates additional random content, ensuring a balanced engagement without overwhelming systems like the Expedition.
The affix values have seen an enhancement, maintaining the power of waystones even though the overall count has slightly reduced. Towers, while no longer critical for modifiers, can still be utilized for enhanced Atlas visibility and guarantee a tablet drop upon completion. Citadels are now more accessible, spawning 66% more frequently to support a more dynamic gameplay experience.
Enhanced Map Mechanics
Every map in the updated PoE 2 now features a boss as a condition to complete it, replacing previous standards which featured maps without guaranteed bosses. While the classic boss maps remain, they offer heightened challenges with more potent adversaries. Low-tier maps contain around a third fewer monster packs, gradually increasing back to standard density as they reach higher ranks. This adjustment balances the difficulty level across various map tiers.
A noteworthy shift is the alteration in map density for modifiers that cause chill, shock, or ignite. These effects now cover 75% less ground in early-tier maps, scaling down to 62% at higher levels, reducing potential frustration for players navigating these challenges.
Quality of Life Improvements
The update also targets runbacks and downtime, particularly within the game's largest 15 map types which have been streamlined to enhance the overall pacing. Additional quality of life improvements include the ability to use Orbs of Alchemy on magic items to reroll them as if they are basic rarity, and various menu enhancements. Notably, stash and merchant interfaces now retain the last search terms for ease of navigation.
Further adjustments in descriptions for skills and items aim to provide clearer guidance, while new NPCs like Jacob, a town crier in Kingsmarch, offer subtle narrative injections to the live game environment. Bug fixes and performance optimizations target Kingsmarch and Abyss mechanics, ensuring a smoother experience for players.
