Greenheart Games has launched Tavern Keeper on Steam after over a decade of development. Patrick Klug, director and co-founder, revealed that the game underwent six major versions over 11.5 years.
Development Timeline and Challenges
Klug noted that the journey wasn't enjoyable for the first seven years due to complex system tuning. The team rewrote the storybook system numerous times and dropped several concepts, such as a Nemesis-inspired hero quest mechanic.
- Six versions developed over 11.5 years.
- Storybook system rewritten dozens of times.
- Nemesis-style system and other ideas discarded.
Unique Gameplay Elements
Tavern Keeper focuses on intricate systems: tavern temperature affects patrons and staff, food spoilage, candle fires, and lighting impacting mood. These elements aim to create a dynamic environment within the game.
Future Outlook for Tavern Keeper
The game will remain in early access for at least another year as developers continue refinement. Klug emphasized that making interconnected systems enjoyable was a key milestone for the team.
