Windows 10 support officially ends on 2025-10-14, but Microsoft offers an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program to help users receive critical updates through 2026. This program is aimed at users who aren't ready for Windows 11.
Eligibility and Enrollment
To enroll in ESU, devices need Windows 10 version 22H2 and can be from editions like Home, Pro, Pro Education, or Workstations. They require the latest updates and a Microsoft account with administrator rights. The service isn’t available for domain-joined or MDM-managed commercial machines.
- Enrollment options include syncing PC settings with a Microsoft account for free, redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or making a $30 purchase.
- Eligible devices can enroll through Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update.
- Each ESU license supports up to 10 devices linked to a single account.
Risks of Opting Out
If not enrolled, devices will miss security updates, increasing malware and ransomware risks. Precautionary steps include using updated antivirus software, modern browsers, and backing up important files.
Long-term Solutions
While Windows 11 is the future target, its system requirements like TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot exclude many older PCs. Forced installation on unsupported hardware poses risks such as stability issues. ESU extends the upgrade window until 2026, providing a buffer to meet Windows 11 requirements or transition to new devices.
