Nano11 Launches: Minimizing Windows 11 Installation Size

11 Sep 2025

NTDEV, a developer focused on optimizing operating system installations, has unveiled a powerful new tool named Nano11. This innovative PowerShell script addresses one of the pressing desires of tech enthusiasts—minimizing the size of Windows 11 installation images. By aggressively pruning Windows 11 installer ISOs, Nano11 can create much smaller installation files, a boon for those who regularly work within virtual environments or on testbed systems.

Exploring the Features of Nano11

Nano11 has the remarkable capability to shrink ISOs by up to approximately 3.5 times their original size. For instance, a standard 7.04 GB ISO can be reduced to just 2.29 GB. This substantial diminution opens up new opportunities for rapid deployment and utilization in various computing scenarios.

The tool works by stripping away what NTDEV describes as 'fluff'—components considered non-essential for basic functionality. These include Windows Hello packages, extraneous drivers, .NET precompiled assemblies, Input Method Editor (IME) components, wallpapers, and several other elements. The streamlined result is an installation image that retains essential functions but sheds the weight of features not critical for all users.

Impressive Deployment in Virtual Environments

In a demonstration of Nano11's prowess, the developer installed the pruned image using VMware Workstation on a 20 GB virtual disk. Initially, this installation consumed around 11 GB. However, by executing the Windows Compact command with LZX compression and removing the pagefile, the occupied disk space was reduced further to approximately 3.2 GB. This profound reduction is a testament to Nano11's efficiency and its suitability for experimental environments.

Usage and Potential Applications

Nano11 is particularly valuable for quick testbed setups and virtual machine (VM) tests, rather than regular production environments. As an 'extreme experimental' tool, it caters to users who crave flexibility and size efficiency without needing the full feature set of the standard Windows 11 installation.

Final installation sizes achieved through Nano11 vary, depending on the source ISO's flavor and any additional cleanup procedures performed post-installation. For example, using a Windows 11 LTSC source ISO with further post-installation steps can reduce the footprint to as little as 2.8 GB, pushing the boundaries of operating system efficiency further.

As tech communities continue to explore the possibilities of leaner operating systems, tools like Nano11 reflect an ongoing trend towards optimizing resources while maintaining functional integrity. This script offers an exciting avenue for experimentation and showcases the potential of thoughtful system customization in an era dominated by ever-increasing software complexities.
