Operator Expansion Set to Enhance Risk of Rain 2 Gameplay

06 Sep 2025

The upcoming Alloyed Collective DLC for Risk of Rain 2 introduces the Operator, a unique character who is a specialist in drone operations. This expansion is set to enrich gameplay with six new stages, a collection of fresh enemies, and an array of drones, enhancing the arsenal available to players. Scheduled for release in 2025, Gearbox Software has teamed up with Jeffrey "Gohr" Hunt, a co-creator of the game, alongside popular modders to ensure an engaging and polished update.

New Additions and Gameplay Mechanics

The Operator is not only adept at managing drones but also capable of holding his own in combat. His primary weapon, the H3-11 OCR Custom pistol, delivers solid damage, with kill shots triggering ricochets to the nearest low-health enemy. By charging this weapon, players can increase its accuracy and damage, offering a strategic advantage without any reduction in power at full charge.

Among his utilities, the Operator can use the Ascent Protocol, which latches onto a drone, propelling him into the air for better combat positioning. This maneuver can be repeated by switching to another drone, allowing prolonged airborne attacks. Such aerial flexibility introduces a dynamic layer to combat, engaging players in innovative techniques.

Advanced Drone Capabilities

The Operator's abilities are further complemented by Admin Override, a secondary ability that commands an active drone to unleash its unique capability. This is coupled with his passive ability, Drone Queue, enabling a rotation through available drones after actions are performed. Such mechanics allow for strategic depth, as players can collect additional drones to build charges for Admin Override, ready to be deployed at crucial moments.

These drones include a variety of functions, such as a Healing Drone that provides restorative energy and temporary speed boosts, a Bombardment Drone that creates chain lightning and stuns, and the formidable TC-280 Prototype that executes powerful strafing attacks. Such diversity in drone abilities ensures that players can adapt to rapidly changing battle conditions.

Perhaps one of the most intriguing aspects of the new character is the Special Ejection Core ability. By overcharging a selected drone, the Operator can launch it into enemies, inflicting the 'bugged' debuff, which slows enemy descent and amplifies damage taken, while stunning them mid-air. This tactical move is pivotal during intense combat scenarios.

As the Alloyed Collective DLC promises to enrich the universe of Risk of Rain 2, Gearbox intends to foster a development culture that avoids crunch, focusing on quality and innovation. This marks another milestone in expanding the horizon for players eager to dive back into the captivating world of rogue battles and strategy. A precise release date remains unannounced, yet the team is on course for a late 2025 launch.
