Dune: Awakening, Funcom's sci-fi survival MMO, has experienced a notable decline in its player base, falling below that of the older Conan Exiles.
Shifts in Player Engagement
Funcom's recent internal restructuring in early October aimed to manage a transition from development to long-term operations. However, this has coincided with a drop in active players. For the first time, player numbers for Dune: Awakening fell below those of the older MMO Conan Exiles, with recorded figures dropping as low as 4,562 compared to Exiles' 5,685. This could signal potential issues with player retention.
Despite an impressive all-time launch peak of 189,333 players, Dune: Awakening is struggling to maintain that momentum. Exiles' recent performance was bolstered by a substantial Steam discount, explaining part of its resurgence.
Feature Adjustments and Community Feedback
Funcom has responded to community feedback by implementing adjustments. They have introduced features to aid players after storms or sandworm attacks, enabling the retrieval of lost transports for a fee. Additionally, they have lowered the durability costs of in-game items. Reviews on Steam currently reflect a mixed response, focusing on the game's high-maintenance systems that may deter less engaged users.
While these changes might offer a modest improvement, further revisions could be necessary to revive Dune: Awakening's player numbers and improve its standing among existing and potential gamers.
