Microsoft has announced that although official support for Windows 10 has ended, users can still maintain security updates by enrolling in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program until 2026. This decision affects a vast number of users worldwide, allowing a temporary secure bridge while transitioning to newer versions.
Enrollment Options and Costs
Windows 10 users have two primary options to enroll in the ESU program without incurring a fee: syncing their Windows settings with a OneDrive account linked to their PC or redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points. For those opting to pay, the enrollment fee is set at $30. European users might have different avenues available for enrollment.
- Users must operate the latest version of Windows 10 and have administrative rights.
- The enrollment requires a visit to Settings > Windows Update to access the ESU enrollment wizard.
- Syncing with OneDrive is limited by its 5 GB free storage capacity.
Availability and Market Scope
Microsoft is progressively rolling out the ESU enrollment wizard across various markets. Currently, only a subset of markets has access, but the company assures that more regions will soon be included. The program allows businesses to purchase up to three additional years of updates.
This approach signals Microsoft's intent to make migration smoother for users not yet ready or able to transition to Windows 11, providing a modest but essential extension of security.
