Experimenting with Animated Wallpapers on Windows 11

21 Sep 2025

In the latest developments from Microsoft, Windows 11 Dev and Beta builds have hinted at a new direction in desktop customization. The prospective feature, discovered by PhantomOfEarth in a range of testing builds, involves setting MP4 or other video files as desktop wallpapers. This concept is reminiscent of the old DreamScene idea from the Windows Vista era; however, it currently remains experimental and concealed within the system.

While the thought of animated backgrounds on desktops is appealing, there is no certainty yet whether this feature will make its way into a stable release. The potential move towards integrating this native animated wallpaper support into Windows 11 could enhance user experience, transforming the way users personalize their space by allowing them to set videos directly as backgrounds.

Comparing With Third-Party Solutions

The nascent Windows 11 feature, however, does have its current limitations. While it introduces native support for animated wallpapers, the feature is not as robust or comprehensive as some existing third-party solutions on the market, such as Wallpaper Engine. This application is known for its expansive library of animated backgrounds that can be searched and downloaded easily by users. Moreover, it offers additional features that are yet to be matched by the potential Windows 11 offering.

Wallpaper Engine allows users to not only employ a wide variety of animations but also interact with them in ways that enhance productivity and entertainment. Users have the flexibility to pause animations when needed to save battery or reduce CPU usage, features not yet seen in the Windows 11 prototype.

For enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the new version of Windows, the potential introduction of animated wallpapers offers a glimpse into a more vibrant and customizable user interface. Yet, despite this excitement, those who currently use third-party solutions like Wallpaper Engine may find themselves holding onto their subscriptions for a bit longer due to the superior experience they provide.

If the Windows 11 animated wallpaper feature ships in future updates, users expecting deeper customizations and a vast selection of animated content might still prefer third-party platforms. Nevertheless, the convenience and simplicity of having a built-in solution could satisfy those with simpler needs and a preference for native applications.

As the technology in Windows 11 continues to evolve, users wait with bated breath to see if this exciting feature will become a staple in the operating system, potentially rewriting the digital canvases of desktops worldwide.
