NVMe Support Enhances Windows Server 2025 Performance

18 Dec 2025

Microsoft has integrated native NVMe SSD support into Windows Server 2025 as an optional feature, enhancing storage performance for enterprise users. The new support eliminates the need to convert NVMe commands into SCSI commands, thereby reducing latency and overhead.

Optimization and Performance Metrics

The redesigned storage stack and I/O processing allow direct, multi-queue access to hardware. This optimization enables PCIe Gen 5 SSDs to deliver performance up to 3.3 million IOPS. Remarkably, host bus adapters (HBAs) can exceed 10 million IOPS, utilizing streamlined, lock-free I/O paths.

  • The support features 64,000 queues, each capable of handling 64,000 commands.
  • Enhancements lead to improved CPU utilization by removing legacy translation layers.
  • No timeline has been set for similar updates to the client version of Windows.

Impact and Feedback

By leveraging NVMe's capabilities, Windows Server 2025 optimizes next-generation storage technologies. This removes legacy constraints, offering a significant boost in efficiency for businesses relying on high-performance storage solutions. Microsoft is actively seeking feedback on this new feature, inviting users to contact them at nativenvme@microsoft.com.
