Helldivers 2: Potential File Size Reduction for PC Release

07 Sep 2025

PC players eagerly anticipating the release of Helldivers 2 might soon have one less obstacle to worry about — the game’s substantial file size. Currently, the install footprint for the game stands at approximately 140 GB, a formidable slice of storage for many gamers. This hefty size is largely attributed to duplicated assets, which means that instead of utilizing a single instance of a texture or asset, these are repeatedly bundled in separate files across the game’s data.

Arrowhead Game Studios' Response

Shams Jorjani, CEO of Arrowhead Game Studios, the developer behind Helldivers 2, addressed this issue recently on the game’s Discord server. While he acknowledged the problem, he informed the community that it has been escalated in terms of priority within the studio. However, Jorjani was unable to furnish a precise timeline indicating when a solution might be rolled out.

Should a fix be implemented, it could lead to a drastic reduction in the storage requirements for the game, potentially bringing the size down to a more manageable 31 GB. This would not only ease the burden on gamers' hard drives but also potentially enhance accessibility for those with limited storage capacity.

The issue of game sizes has been a burgeoning concern in the gaming industry, as developers strive to balance graphical fidelity, content richness, and economic data management. For Arrowhead Game Studios, efficient storage optimization is now at the forefront of their operational priorities for Helldivers 2. The successful resolution of this asset duplication conundrum could serve as a pivotal case study in addressing similar challenges faced by game developers worldwide.

As anticipation builds for Helldivers 2, the gaming community remains hopeful that this technical huddle will soon be over, allowing them more seamless and efficient gameplay experience. Arrowhead Game Studios' commitment to addressing this issue reflects a growing trend in the industry towards improving user experience through smarter data handling.
