A newly released script for Windows 11 allows users to disable AI features, including the pervasive Copilot, returning the operating system to a simpler form. The script modifies registry keys to remove AI elements from applications like Edge, Paint, and Notepad.
Script Functionality and Instructions
The script, called RemoveWindowsAI, operates through Windows PowerShell 5.1. Users can execute it by copying a command into the PowerShell window, where a user interface guides them through disabling specific AI features. Notably, users must refrain from using PowerShell 7 to run the script effectively.
After running the script, applications show no sign of Copilot, presenting a cleaner interface without AI prompts.
Underlying Changes and Implications
By adjusting system settings, the script also interacts with Windows Update to prevent reinstallation of the AI features. This workaround supports users who prefer operating systems without integrated AI functionalities or who use preferred third-party AI tools.
While unofficial, the script offers a solution to those seeking an AI-free experience until Microsoft potentially provides an official option.
