Skygard Arena's tactical skirmishes deliver a unique fantasy twist inspired by turn-based classics like "Into the Breach" and "XCOM," offering fans of the genre fresh gameplay on small, intricate battle maps. Developed by Gemelli Games, Skygard Arena 1.0 has officially been released on Steam after nearly a year in early access, bolstered by a new champion introduction and full Steam Deck support.
Combat in Skygard Arena emphasizes strategic positioning and movement, forcing players to consider every angle and line of sight when executing tactical maneuvers. The arenas themselves are dynamic battlegrounds, featuring objectives such as capturable pillars. These additions allow for redeployment of fallen team members, which brings a territory control element into play, significantly deepening the strategic layer of each encounter. Skill combinations that enable repositioning, along with explosive ability combos, further increase the tactical complexity and excitement.
Factions and Champions
The world within Skygard is richly divided into five distinct factions, each with its own narrative and strategic focus: the Katia, an alliance of Elves and Dwarves known for their legendary flying city; the Scarlet Empire, known for their relentless conquests; the Clouds Clan, representing the resilient nomadic tribes; the Guardians, who hold the knowledge of ancient magic; and the Silver Kingdom, driven by their devotion to an angelic queen.
Players command a squad of three champions, each capable of switching between different personas. These personas come equipped with unique spell loadouts and can be further customized with relics granting passive boosts. This level of customization promises over 500,000 possible team compositions, each offering a new strategic challenge and depth.
Game Modes and Features
Skygard Arena primarily draws players in with its story-driven campaign, but it also offers a broad selection of gameplay modes. Players can experience the pressure of AI skirmishes, which mirror the strategic anticipation of chess engines, or engage in competitive online battles through both ranked and casual PvP matches.
Available on Steam at an introductory discount of 35%, Skygard Arena is priced at $9.74 / £8.31 until October 2nd. Fans of tactical games looking for a fresh challenge with a fantasy aesthetic will find much to appreciate in this newly launched title.
