Indie Developer Focuses on Game Optimization Strategies

07 Oct 2025

The indie developer known as gitpullorigin has taken an innovative approach to game optimization by purchasing a significantly low-cost PC to fine-tune their latest project, Yes, My Queen. This move came after the developer received several reports from players noting performance issues with the game. In an effort to address these problems, gitpullorigin decided to test the game on a budget machine, priced at approximately $104.

Testing on Low-End Hardware

To ensure Yes, My Queen can run smoothly on a variety of systems, the developer chose a machine with very modest specifications. The PC features a 1.80 GHz Intel Core i3-3217U processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 120GB SSD. This setup effectively mirrors the type of hardware that might be used by players with a cheap PC, presenting a true test for the game's optimization.

During testing, several key issues were identified. One notable problem was with the Vulkan graphics API. On the PC’s low-tier integrated GPU, Vulkan caused all on-screen text to disappear. Additionally, the software mode custom cursor introduced noticeable input lag, potentially affecting gameplay experience. These findings were crucial, as they highlighted specific areas needing refinement to enhance the game's performance.

By using this pragmatic method of testing on weaker hardware, the indie developer effectively exposed bottlenecks that were less obvious on mid-tier systems. This approach allows developers to anticipate and resolve issues that could potentially hinder the gaming experience for users playing on less powerful PCs.

Yes, My Queen, a chess roguelike developed by the Wall Spaghetti team, combines elements of card collection and strategy as players build armies to defeat enemy queens. With a demo recently launched, the performance feedback received has been instrumental in guiding optimization efforts. The choice to utilize low-end hardware for testing demonstrates a commitment to providing a seamless gaming experience across various platforms.

In today’s game development landscape, ensuring optimal performance on diverse hardware configurations is crucial. This strategy not only shows dedication to enhancing the user experience but also reflects the innovative spirit often seen in the indie development community.
