Owlcat Games is known for developing critically acclaimed RPGs such as Wrath of the Righteous and Kingmaker. Recently, the studio has redirected its focus towards the Warhammer 40k universe, launching Rogue Trader in 2023 and currently deep into the development of Dark Heresy. Yet, amid these ventures, the potential resurrection of the beloved Pathfinder series remains an intriguing possibility within the company.
Passionate Discussions and Heated Debates
In a recent conversation with executive producer Anatoly Shestov, the prospect of reviving the Pathfinder series was broached. Shestov acknowledged the fondness held internally for the fantasy adventure that earned high praise, with Wrath of the Righteous scoring well on Metacritic and achieving a positive reception on Steam. However, Owlcat Games’s journey post-2021 has steered towards the expansive narratives of Warhammer 40k.
Shestov outlined the internal dynamics that fuel game development decisions. “We take pride in what we made with Pathfinder,” he noted, expressing the studio's affection for the series. Nonetheless, shifting gears towards Dark Heresy was driven by the collective passion it incited. “This time, the passion for Dark Heresy was way bigger than any other passion inside our studio,” he recounted, explaining the decision-making process fostered by enthusiasm.
Shestov revealed that discussions surrounding the studio's next project often ignite fervent debates. “Whenever we're discussing what to do after Dark Heresy, and we'll be discussing this internally way before its release, there will be some pretty heated discussions,” he mentioned. With a twinkle of optimism, he added, “There will be some pretty stubborn people trying to influence the decision, and some of these passionate, stubborn people will be working their asses off to achieve us, as a studio, working on Pathfinder again.”
Future Possibilities
While Owlcat Games has not confirmed a new Pathfinder title, Shestov’s words leave the door open for future possibilities. “Do we consider [a new Pathfinder game]? Yes, we consider any good option, and this option is one of the best,” he conceded. This suggests that, although the studio’s current trajectory is firmly set within the Warhammer 40k realm, Pathfinder still holds a cherished place in Owlcat’s portfolio of potential projects.
As fans and industry alike wait with bated breath to see what Owlcat Games will unveil after Dark Heresy, the spirited dialogues and creative passions that flare up within the studio promise exciting prospects yet to unfold.
