MachineGames Considers Sequel for Wolfenstein Series

08 Sep 2025

As an established name in the gaming industry, MachineGames is no stranger to breathing new life into beloved franchises. Fans and analysts alike are tuned in to the latest developments stemming from the studio’s interest in continuing the iconic Wolfenstein series. In a recent video series on MachineGames' history, studio head Jerk Gustafsson expressed a clear desire to create a direct sequel to 2017's Wolfenstein: The New Colossus.

Continuing a Beloved Narrative

Jerk Gustafsson, reflecting on the company’s journey, stated, "We have always seen this as a trilogy," alluding to the studio's vision for the franchise. While the expansive universe offers countless possibilities, plotting a direct follow-up poses significant narrative challenges. The end of Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus left players with an open yet potentially conclusive storyline. Meanwhile, 2019's spin-off Youngblood took a bold leap forward in the timeline, focusing on the protagonist BJ Blazkowicz’s twin daughters.

This narrative trajectory complicates plans for a potential game, as the sequel could manifest as an interquel nestled between The New Colossus and Youngblood, or even a continuation of the latter’s arc. An alternative approach might involve a timeline retcon, a risky move for a series deeply loved for its story integrity.

Awaiting the Next Move

Despite these hurdles, Gustafsson remains enthusiastic about returning to the franchise, reinforcing that the team has more stories within the Wolfenstein universe to tell. However, industry experts warn fans to brace for a significant wait, as the studio has only recently launched The Order of Giants, and may not prioritize a new Wolfenstein title immediately.

With MachineGames cementing its reputation for narrative depth and engaging gameplay, the anticipation surrounding a potential sequel is a testament to the enduring legacy of Wolfenstein. As fans eagerly speculate the direction of the series, the future remains open-ended, promising possibilities that both honor the past and push storytelling in bold new directions.
