Obsidian announced a new turn-based mode for Pillars of Eternity, ten years after its original release. The open beta will start on 2023-11-05, offering players a fresh way to engage with the game.
New Gameplay Options
Director Josh Sawyer outlined features that include increased combat lethality and new mechanics like "Unbound Turns" and "Smarter Free Actions." These elements aim to resolve balance issues experienced in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. Players can freely switch between the Turn-Based Mode and Real-Time with Pause (RTWP) through game options.
Flexible Game Modes
Players have the option to select Turn-Based Mode at the start of a new game or switch modes later via the game's settings. Obsidian is also exploring a direct HUD toggle to make it easier for players to switch during gameplay.
Addressing Past Challenges
Obsidian aims to tackle the balance problems faced in Deadfire by allowing more flexible switching and by making design adjustments that minimize the impact on character builds. The new mode is expected to enhance gameplay strategy and improve overall game flexibility.
