Glowstick Entertainment is about to make a leap from the digital realm to the cinematic screens as its popular horror game, Dark Deception, is being adapted into a feature film. The hit survival horror game captivated audiences with its unique maze-based gameplay set in a haunting hotel environment, amassing over six and a half million copies sold and engaging 58 million players worldwide.
The Adaptation: A New Chapter
The transition from game to film will be managed by indie production company So It Goes Entertainment. Spearheading the project are producers Adrian Speckert and Cory Todd Hughes, although details on the casting and the director have yet to be unveiled. This move represents an exciting diversification for both Glowstick Entertainment and Dark Deception, promising to capture the chilling suspense of the game on a different platform.
Trademark Triumph: Fighting Against Odds
Dark Deception's journey to the silver screen is not just a testament to its popularity but also to Glowstick's resilience in overcoming legal hurdles. Previously embroiled in a trademark dispute with Monster Energy, Glowstick Entertainment faced allegations regarding the use of the term "Monsters" in its game title, Dark Deception: Monsters & Mortals. Monster Energy alleged trademark infringement and offered a settlement that sought to restrict the use of the term by Glowstick.
In an assertive response to Monster's legal threats, Glowstick CEO Vincent Livings took the bold step of publicly sharing the legal documentation and contesting the claim. The battle culminated in August 2023, with the US Patent and Trademark Office ruling favourably for Glowstick, thereby allowing the studio to continue using the terms in its game titles—a significant victory for the indie developer.
A Bright Future Ahead
For indie developers, Dark Deception's evolution from a game to a multimedia phenomenon exemplifies how innovative creativity combined with firm resolve can lead to new horizons. It is not merely a tale of survival in the competitive realm of gaming, but a story of triumph against corporate pressures. As the production gears up, there is a strong sense of anticipation about how the game's engaging horror elements will translate into film.
As Glowstick Entertainment and So It Goes Entertainment collaborate, the adaptation of Dark Deception into a feature film holds promise of opening doors to expand its reach, bringing both fresh narratives and thrilling experiences to its extensive fan base.
