Microsoft has officially released ISO install media for Windows 11 version 25H2. On September 10, the downloadable ISOs became accessible via the Windows Insider download page. This release provides testers a smoother upgrade path, offering flexibility ahead of the update's general availability anticipated later this year. Build 26200.5074, the precursor to 25H2, was seeded to the Release Preview Channel on August 29. As with previous annual updates, 25H2 installs over the existing 24H2 base rather than as a full new build. This approach facilitates a smaller, faster update process while core system components remain unchanged.
Upgrading with Ease
The newly available ISO files offer users significant control over their upgrade experience. Testers can opt for an in-place upgrade by simply mounting the ISO, or they may prefer a fresh start by creating bootable media using software like Rufus. Although the 25H2 isn't introducing major aesthetic changes, it aims to enhance user experience via substantial behind-the-scenes updates. This includes the removal of certain deprecated legacy tools, like PowerShell 2.0 and WMIC.
Enhanced Administration in Education and Managed Devices
Another notable improvement is tailored for administrators managing education and enterprise devices. 25H2 allows these admins to uninstall a curated list of Microsoft Store apps, offering greater customization and optimizing device performance for organizational needs.
In terms of support, 25H2's timing will reset upon its official launch, potentially in October, leading to an extended support window for devices that adopt the update. This provides users continuity and assurance, aligning with Microsoft's ongoing strategy to streamline and enhance its Windows operating system.
