XDefiant's Origins Linked to Splinter Cell Project

17 Nov 2025

XDefiant, a 2024 multiplayer shooter from Ubisoft, initially started as a new Splinter Cell project. In 2017, former Telltale designers Nick Herman, Dennis Lenart, and Pierre Shorette joined Ubisoft with the goal of revitalizing the Splinter Cell franchise.

Project Evolution

The project existed for six months before Ubisoft executives shifted their focus. Seeking live-service successes akin to Call of Duty, the company pushed the team toward creating a narrative game-as-a-service (GAAS). Although early prototypes were developed, corporate interest waned, leading to the eventual creation of XDefiant.

Market Response and Developer Shift

XDefiant received initial praise for refreshing gameplay but eventually shut down due to declining player numbers. Meanwhile, Herman and colleagues departed Ubisoft to form AdHoc Studio, releasing Dispatch, validating the enduring appeal of narrative-driven experiences. There are discussions within Ubisoft about a Splinter Cell remake, signaling a possible revival of interest in the franchise.
