Microsoft is ending regular security updates for Windows 10 on 2025-10-14, but users can access a yearlong extension through the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program.
Enrollment Options
The ESU program allows users to receive updates until 2026-10-13. Enrolling in this program typically costs $30, but eligible users can enroll for free by syncing their Windows settings with a OneDrive account or by redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
Users need the latest Windows 10 version and administrative privileges to enroll. The enrollment wizard can be accessed through the Windows Update settings.
Storage and Access Challenges
OneDrive offers 5GB of free storage, which may be insufficient for some users opting for the free enrollment option. The availability of the enrollment wizard is gradually being rolled out, a Microsoft spokesperson revealed.
While Microsoft provides detailed guidance for enabling ESU, businesses have the option to purchase up to three additional years of security updates.
