Data Breach at Epic Games Store Exposes Unannounced Game Projects

13 Jun 2024

A new, unofficial online database called EpicDB has caused quite a stir in the gaming community after it was discovered that the database contained listings of numerous unannounced PC game projects from the Epic Games Store. Similar to SteamDB, EpicDB was promptly taken offline after Epic Games became aware that its private store data was being accessed without authorization.

An Epic Games spokesperson confirmed the breach, stating that they have released an update to prevent third-party tools from accessing unpublished product titles from the Epic Games Store catalogue.

Unveiling the Unannounced

Among the games uncovered in the database were listings under codenames, with some easily identifiable while others remained a mystery. For example, Saber Interactive had a listing for a Turok project, although it is unclear whether it is a new game or a remaster.

One of the more intriguing discoveries was the listing for BioShock 4, which has been in development under the codename Parkside. This project is being worked on by publisher 2K and has been in the works since at least 2019.

Internet sleuths on platforms like Reddit and ResetEra have been busy trying to decipher the unknown codenames in the database. One such discovery suggests that a project codenamed Utah from Sony Interactive Entertainment could potentially be a PC port of The Last of Us Part 2.

Another exciting find was a project codenamed Semla from Rockstar Games, with speculation that it could be the long-awaited PC port of Red Dead Redemption 1 based on its file size.

The Codename Conundrum

Not all codenames were as revealing, with some companies opting for fun food-themed names for their projects. Sega has projects codenamed Porridge, Croquembouche, and CurlyWurly, while Ubisoft has Puffpastry and Profiterole. Saber Interactive went with Chimichanga, and Square Enix chose Butterkaka.

Overall, the data breach has provided an interesting glimpse into the world of unannounced game projects, leaving gamers eagerly anticipating official announcements from the companies involved.
