This milestone marks the fourth time this year that the platform has surpassed its previous records, following notable peaks of 34, 35, and 36 million users in March.
Trending Titles Fueling the Surge
The surge in user numbers coincides with the popularity of several top-tier games, including:
- Black Myth: Wukong
- Counter-Strike 2
- Dota 2
- PUBG
- Banana
Among these, Black Myth: Wukong has emerged as a significant driver of this growth, achieving a peak concurrent player count of 2,068,291 within the last 24 hours. Just four days prior, it reached an all-time high of 2,415,714 players, positioning it as the second most-played game in Steam’s history, trailing only behind PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS.
Reflecting on the platform’s resilience, Randy Pitchford of Gearbox made a bold prediction five years ago on X/Twitter, suggesting that Steam “may look like a dying store.” In light of recent events, it’s clear that such a fate is far from imminent. Pitchford has since revisited this topic, particularly in discussions surrounding the anticipated release of Borderlands 4 on Steam.
