In a remarkable display of success, the Chinese video game sensation Black Myth: Wukong has surpassed an impressive milestone, selling over 18 million units to date. This revelation comes from Daniel Wu, the largest external shareholder in the game’s developer, Game Science, who shared these figures with Bloomberg.
Financial Backing and Future Prospects
The financial backbone of this ambitious project is noteworthy, with a reported budget of $100 million. A significant portion of this funding has been provided by Wu’s own company, Hero Games. Wu is optimistic about the game’s trajectory, suggesting that Black Myth: Wukong has the potential to exceed 30 million units sold.
Reflecting on the journey of Game Science, Wu candidly stated, “If you want to hear the truth, Game Science’s success today is built upon its four failures in a row.” This acknowledgment of past challenges underscores the resilience and growth of the studio. He emphasized that Wukong not only showcases their exceptional game-making skills but also highlights their ability to weave compelling narratives infused with rich Chinese cultural elements.
The partnership between Hero Games and Game Science began in 2017 when Hero Games acquired a 20 percent stake in the developer for 60 million yuan (approximately $9.5 million).
