Microsoft Tests Compact Mode for Game Bar to Enhance Small Screen Navigation

17 Aug 2024

Better Navigation, More Control with Compact Mode

Microsoft is currently in the process of testing a new feature known as Compact Mode, aimed at enhancing the user experience of the Game Bar in both Windows 11 and Windows 10. This initiative is particularly focused on improving navigation for users on smaller screens, such as handheld devices like the Asus ROG Ally X, as well as for those utilizing controllers. The redesigned Game Bar layout promises a more streamlined interface, featuring a revamped Home widget that showcases currently running games alongside recently played titles.

The Game Bar serves as a central hub within Windows 11, allowing users to manage their gaming environment effortlessly. With the introduction of Compact Mode, players will gain the ability to exit games directly from the Home widget, eliminating the need to navigate through in-game menus or return to the desktop. Additionally, new features such as the Resource widget will provide insights into which applications are consuming system resources, enabling users to close them swiftly to enhance performance. The widgets menu will also allow for easy exploration and access to installed widgets from the Widget Store.

A Major Handheld Gaming Push from Microsoft

This update signifies Microsoft’s commitment to optimizing Windows 11 for a range of non-traditional PC devices, particularly the burgeoning market of handheld gaming consoles. Devices like the ROG Ally X and Lenovo Legion Go, which operate on Windows 11, have highlighted the need for an operating system that caters to smaller screens and gamepad controls. Currently, Windows 11 is primarily designed for larger screens and traditional input methods, which can lead to a cumbersome experience on handhelds. In contrast, SteamOS offers a more tailored experience for handheld gaming, making these enhancements to the Game Bar crucial for improving usability on Windows-based devices.

For those eager to experience Compact Mode ahead of its general release, joining the Xbox Insider Program is a straightforward option. This free program allows users to access new features and updates early while providing valuable feedback to refine the gaming experience. Interested users can download the Xbox Insider Hub app from the Microsoft Store and log in with their Microsoft account to get started.
