Microsoft Expands Windows AI Features to AMD and Intel Laptops in November

05 Sep 2024

Microsoft is poised to expand its innovative Windows AI features to a broader audience, with a rollout set for November. This development marks a significant shift as the previously exclusive Copilot Plus features, which were available solely on Qualcomm-powered devices, will now be accessible on select AMD and Intel laptops.

New Processor Announcements

AMD has already introduced laptops that meet the hardware requirements for Microsoft’s Copilot Plus features, while Intel is unveiling its latest offering: the Intel Core Ultra 200V processors, codenamed Lunar Lake. According to Intel’s press release, all devices equipped with these processors and running the latest version of Windows will be eligible for a complimentary update to access Copilot Plus features starting in November.

Microsoft has confirmed that both Intel’s Lunar Lake and AMD’s Strix Point PCs will receive these enhancements, with some features potentially being previewed for the Windows Insider Community prior to the full rollout.

Features of Copilot Plus

The Copilot Plus PC features are designed to enhance user experience significantly. Among the highlights are:

  • Auto Super Resolution: A competitor to DLSS that enhances gaming frame rates by upscaling content.
  • NPU Utilization: These new PCs will leverage neutral processing unit chips to offload upscaling tasks from the CPU and GPU, optimizing performance.
  • Image Cocreate Features: Enhancements that facilitate collaborative image editing.
  • Improved Windows Studio Effects: Upgraded tools for creators and professionals.
  • Accelerated App Performance: Applications like DaVinci Resolve Studio will benefit from NPU chip capabilities to speed up various tasks.

Additionally, Microsoft is working on integrating its Recall AI features into Copilot Plus PCs, a feature that had previously faced delays due to security concerns. The company is now targeting an October release for Windows Insider testers, with a broader rollout to follow.

Update, September 3rd: This article has been updated to reflect Microsoft’s confirmation that AMD Strix Point laptops will also receive Copilot Plus features in November.
