Microsoft, Qualcomm Launch AI-Ready PCs, Intensifying Intel Competition

27 Jun 2024

Microsoft and Qualcomm have delivered some real Intel competition. Last week, Microsoft launched its first round of Copilot Plus PCs, promising better battery life, performance that rivals the MacBook Air, and AI-ready chips. After a week of testing Microsoft’s new Surface devices, it’s clear that these promises are largely fulfilled.

Battery Life That Impresses

The standout feature of these new devices is undoubtedly the battery life. The 9.99 base model of the Surface Laptop has shown remarkable endurance during testing. It’s been possible to use the laptop for an entire workday without worrying about recharging. Even after closing the lid for several days, the battery life remained robust, a feat rarely seen in Intel-powered laptops.

This improvement in battery life is largely due to the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite and Plus chips. These chips deliver the Windows on Arm experience that Microsoft has been promising for over a decade. While there are some expected app emulation drawbacks, they are minor if your app needs aren’t complex.

Performance and AI-Ready Chips

In addition to battery life, the performance of these new Surface devices is noteworthy. They match the performance of a MacBook Air, which is no small feat. The inclusion of AI-ready chips further enhances their appeal, making them a strong competitor in the market.

These advancements put significant pressure on Intel to respond. For years, Intel has been a dominant player in the laptop chip market. However, with Microsoft and Qualcomm stepping up their game, Intel will need to innovate to maintain its position.

Overall, Microsoft’s new Surface devices with Qualcomm chips offer a compelling alternative to Intel-powered laptops. With impressive battery life, strong performance, and AI-ready capabilities, they represent a significant step forward in the laptop market.
