Windows Updates Bug Causes System Failures, Microsoft Investigates

27 Jun 2024

A couple of days ago, Microsoft rolled out the newest non-security update for Windows 11 and Windows 10. While Windows 10 received a series of helpful fixes, Windows 11 saw the introduction of some exciting new features and changes. However, users who are considering installing KB5039302 should proceed with caution, as a serious bug has been identified that could render their computer unusable.

System Failures and Infinite Restarts

Microsoft has officially acknowledged that KB5039302 is causing some systems to experience infinite restarts. The issue primarily impacts devices running client versions of Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2, particularly those utilizing virtual machines and nested virtualization tools like CloudPC, DevBox, or Azure Virtual Desktop.

Unfortunately, there are currently no known workarounds for the bug, prompting Microsoft to halt the distribution of KB5039302 to prevent further instances of system failures.

After installing updates released on June 26, 2024 (KB5039302), some devices may encounter startup failures. Affected systems could enter a cycle of continuous restarts, requiring recovery operations to restore normal functionality.

Impact on Virtual Machine Tools

This issue is more likely to impact devices leveraging virtual machine tools and nested virtualization features, such as CloudPC, DevBox, and Azure Virtual Desktop. Our team is actively investigating to pinpoint the specific conditions that trigger this problem.

While our investigation is ongoing, we have paused the deployment of this update through Windows Update and Windows Update for Business. Consequently, your device may not currently receive this update.

Microsoft is diligently working on a solution for the bug and plans to provide further updates and information in the near future.
