Microsoft Releases Optional Windows 11 Update KB5043145 with New Features

25 Sep 2024

Microsoft has unveiled an optional update for Windows 11 version 23H2, which remains the most current version for the majority of users. The anticipated release date for Windows 11 version 24H2 has not yet been confirmed, following the removal of previous indications that it might launch on October 8th.

KB5043145: The Major Changes

KB5043145 is a non-security optional update that previews changes slated for next month’s cumulative update. New features are rolled out gradually to users. This update also addresses several fixes alongside the new features.

The optional update is readily available, and while many users may prefer to wait for the next Patch Tuesday, some might be inclined to explore the new offerings sooner. To check for the latest update, navigate to Start > Settings > Windows Update and click the check for updates button. A restart will be necessary to finalize the installation.

Among the notable changes introduced in this update, the restoration of the sign-out option in the Start menu stands out. Previously, Microsoft had removed links to sign out and other options, leaving users with a limited interface when clicking the profile icon. With this update, the sign-out feature makes a welcome return.

Tip: For a more efficient sign-out process, users can right-click on the Start button and select the option under Shut down or sign out, which also provides access to Sleep, Shut down, or Restart functionalities.

Additionally, Microsoft has identified four features that will be rolled out gradually, three of which are particularly noteworthy:

  • Local files can now be shared directly from the taskbar when they appear in search results.
  • The search box in the Windows Share window has been removed.
  • The Lock screen can now display media controls while media is playing.

Note: The gradual rollout approach means that Microsoft determines the timing of when each feature becomes available on Windows 11 PCs, which could range from immediate access to delays spanning days, weeks, or even months.

In addition to new features, this update addresses several non-security issues. Notably, two fixes resolve hangs in Microsoft Edge when using Internet Explorer Mode, while another fix addresses a sync issue with Defender for Endpoint. Furthermore, an irritating problem where Outlook prompted users to enter a PIN each time they opened an encrypted email has been resolved, ensuring a smoother experience for all users once the update is installed.

For a comprehensive overview of changes, users can visit the Windows Blog. All fixes and new features will be included in the cumulative update scheduled for October 8th.
