Memoriapolis Strategy Game Launches in Early Access on Steam

31 Aug 2024

Gameplay Dynamics

Memoriapolis intertwines elements reminiscent of the classic Civilization series, offering a blend of survival city-building mechanics. Players engage in essential tasks such as constructing farms, quarries, and woodcutters, all while harvesting resources to expand their domains. The game also emphasizes the establishment of trade routes and the management of cultural evolution through monumental constructions known as “Wonders.” As players progress from the age of antiquity to medieval times and beyond, they shape not only the physical landscape but also the cultural fabric of their cities.

World events add an intriguing layer to the gameplay. For instance, a request from Macedonia to assist in the siege of Amphipolis presented a moral dilemma. Opting to defend Greece instead, players can influence their city’s safety and citizen morale, highlighting the interconnectedness of political alliances and resource management. Such decisions can lead to significant consequences, particularly as the Greeks prepare to confront Rome, potentially impacting the player’s future stability.

As cities flourish, players can embark on ambitious projects like the construction of the Sassi di Matera, a Wonder that demands vast resources. Early engagement in trade proves beneficial, allowing players to establish marketplaces and merchant routes with neighboring cities, thus acquiring necessary materials that might not have been researched or produced in-house. Successfully completing a Wonder not only signifies progress but also facilitates advancement to the next age, further unlocking opportunities for growth.

Memoriapolis distinguishes itself from typical city builders by focusing on broader strategic decisions rather than minute details like road layouts and decorative elements. While the game offers some animated visuals of city life, a desire for a closer zoom to explore the bustling streets and arenas remains. Although players may not track individual citizens as seen in titles like Cities: Skylines, a more intimate view of the city’s activities would enhance the immersive experience.

With its early access launch, developer 5PM Studio anticipates a four to six-month period of community feedback to refine the game further. As players embark on this grand journey of civilization building, Memoriapolis promises a fresh perspective on the genre, inviting them to craft a legacy that spans the ages.
