Microsoft has successfully addressed a known issue with Windows 10 updates that was causing problems with Microsoft Connected Cache (MCC) node discovery on enterprise networks. The fix is part of the KB5040525 July 2024 preview update for Windows 10 22H2, which was released recently along with fixes for other issues such as WDAC problems leading to memory leaks and app failures.
According to Microsoft, the problem has been resolved with the latest Windows updates released on July 23, 2024 (KB5040525) and onwards. The company recommends that users install the latest security update to benefit from important enhancements and bug fixes, including the MCC node discovery issue.
MCC servers serve as software-based caching solutions that can be deployed on various types of servers to cache and deliver content downloaded from Microsoft’s content delivery network (CDN). This enables faster content delivery over local networks, especially for Windows updates.
Specific Impact on Enterprise Networks
The bug specifically affected Windows 10 21H2 and 22H2 devices configured to find MCC endpoints using DHCP Option 235, a configuration commonly used in enterprise environments. Home users are unlikely to have been impacted by this issue.
Temporary Workarounds Available
For users who prefer not to install the KB5040525 update, Microsoft has provided temporary workarounds to help Windows admins restore download caching functionality for end-users. These workarounds involve setting up the Microsoft Connected Cache endpoint in the DOCacheHost policy and making adjustments to the DOCacheHostSource setting.
Admins can also utilize Group Policies to address the issue, with support available through Microsoft’s official channels. Paid support options are also available for those who require additional assistance.
