Kaspersky Exits US Market, Partners with UltraAV for Software Transition

24 Sep 2024

Kaspersky's Strategic Shift in the US Market

Kaspersky has recently made significant adjustments to its operations in the United States, withdrawing its anti-malware software from the devices of its US customers. This decision stems from a ban imposed by the US Department of Commerce, which has prompted Kaspersky to forge a partnership with antivirus provider UltraAV to ensure that users receive automatic replacements for the software they have lost.

Following its addition to the Entity List in June, a designation that identifies “foreign individuals, companies, and organizations deemed a national security concern,” Kaspersky ceased its US operations and laid off its domestic workforce. The Biden administration’s announcement of the ban was rooted in concerns over potential national security risks.

In September, Kaspersky began reaching out to its customers, reassuring them that they would continue to receive cybersecurity protection through UltraAV. However, the communication reportedly lacked clarity regarding the automatic nature of the software transition, leaving some users unaware of the changes taking place on their systems.

Roll Up the Welcome Mat

The transition has not been without its challenges, as some users have expressed dissatisfaction with the new antivirus provider. One Reddit user voiced their concerns, stating, “I don’t trust UltraAV for a few reasons. Not only do I not trust it, but apparently I need to log in to even do a system scan.” Another user, unaware of the software transfer, initially suspected that a virus had infiltrated their system and planned to uninstall UltraAV. A third user echoed these sentiments, revealing they had opted to switch to Bitdefender instead.

Despite the mixed reactions, Kaspersky has assured its former customers that it collaborated closely with UltraAV to uphold security standards during this transition. The switch took effect on September 19, with the intention of ensuring that users would not experience any lapse in protection as Kaspersky exited the market.

For those considering alternatives to their new antivirus software, some users have shared detailed step-by-step instructions on how to remove UltraAV. While these methods have been tested by various individuals, the long-term effectiveness of such solutions remains uncertain, leaving customers to navigate their newfound software landscape with caution.
