Microsoft Unveils Windows 11 Build 27686 with Enhanced HDR Features

16 Aug 2024

Microsoft has unveiled Windows 11 Build 27686, introducing a range of intriguing enhancements, particularly in the realm of HDR (High Dynamic Range) capabilities. As highlighted by Phantom on X, one of the standout features is the option to “allow HDR video streaming even when HDR is off.” This innovative functionality enables users to enjoy HDR content without the necessity of activating HDR across the entire system, providing a seamless viewing experience.

New HDR Settings in Windows 11

Moreover, the label for “HDR video streaming” under Display capabilities has been refined to “HDR video streaming, games, apps and more,” hinting at the potential for additional HDR-related features in forthcoming updates.

Other Improvements in Windows 11 Build 27686

Beyond HDR enhancements, Build 27686 brings several other noteworthy improvements. A subtle yet appealing visual update has been made in the Disks & Volumes settings, where the “Create volume” button for unallocated disk space now boasts rounded corners, accompanied by an animated chevron icon that adds a touch of interactivity when clicked.

This build also introduces support for ReFS (Resilient File System) version 3.15. However, it’s essential to note that Windows continues to format partitions using the earlier version 3.14, which was rolled out in a previous build (26047).

In a significant move for users managing storage, Build 27686 confirms that a future release of Windows 11 will eliminate the 32GB size limit for FAT32 partitions, paving the way for a maximum capacity of 2TB. This enhancement is expected to greatly benefit users who require more extensive storage solutions.
