Windows 11 Build 27686 Released for Insiders with Sandbox Enhancements

16 Aug 2024

The latest release of Windows 11, Build 27686, has made its debut for Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel, bringing with it a host of new features and important updates. Among these enhancements is the preview of the Windows Sandbox Client, which now includes runtime clipboard detection, audio and video input control, and the ability to share folders with the host during runtime.

Windows Sandbox Enhancements

The Windows Sandbox, a lightweight desktop environment designed for running applications in isolation, first emerged with Windows 10. It allows users to operate applications without the complexities of a full Hyper-V virtual machine, utilizing hardware-based virtualization for kernel isolation instead. This latest build continues to refine the sandbox experience, enhancing its functionality while maintaining its core purpose of providing a secure testing environment.

Additionally, Microsoft has introduced more command line support within the preview, although the company has characterized this implementation as “super early.” Users are advised that the command switches may evolve as development progresses. This build represents the forefront of Microsoft’s innovations, but it comes with a caveat: features available in the Canary Channel may not necessarily transition into future release builds, and the stability of this channel can be unpredictable, even by Insider standards.

Significant Updates and Fixes

Among the notable updates in this initial release of the 27xxx series is a significant increase in the FAT32 limit from 32 GB to an impressive 2 TB for the command line format function. Furthermore, a fix has been implemented to address a concerning issue within the Registry Editor. Previously, pasting a HEX value into a text box could lead to unexpected results, such as 0x1 being altered to 0x411.

Cautions for Copilot+ PC Users

However, users of Copilot+ PCs should proceed with caution. Microsoft has issued a warning that signing up for the Canary Channel may result in the loss of Windows Hello PIN and biometric sign-in capabilities, accompanied by error code 0xd0000225 and the message, “Something went wrong, and your PIN isn’t available.” In such cases, users will need to recreate their PIN to regain access.

As Windows Insiders navigate the evolving landscape of Windows 11, the Canary Channel offers a glimpse into the future, albeit with its share of risks and uncertainties.
