Microsoft Enables Reprogramming of Copilot Key in Latest Windows 11 Preview

20 Sep 2024

Microsoft has taken a significant step in enhancing user experience by enabling the reprogramming of the Copilot key on Copilot+ PCs, as well as future keyboards featuring this dedicated button. This new capability, introduced in the latest Windows 11 insider preview build 22635.4225, allows users to customize the functionality of the key beyond its default setting, which opens the Copilot AI assistant.

Enhanced Flexibility for Users

With this update, Windows 11 users can now redirect the Copilot key to launch other applications, providing greater flexibility for those who may not frequently utilize the Copilot assistant. The reprogramming process is straightforward, accessible through the Settings app under the personalization and text input sub-menu. Here, users can select an alternative application of their choice, provided it is “MSIX packaged and signed.” This requirement is in place to uphold security and privacy standards, ensuring a safe experience for all users.

However, this limitation does mean that users will not have the freedom to assign any executable application to the Copilot key. The restriction to certified apps that utilize the MSIX packaging format may feel constraining, especially for those who wish to customize their experience more extensively. MSIX, which offers advantages in reliability, network bandwidth, and disk space efficiency compared to traditional executable formats, is still in the process of wider adoption. Consequently, some applications may not yet have an MSIX-supported version available for binding to the Copilot key.

For those eager to explore further customization options, there are third-party software solutions available that allow for more extensive remapping of the Copilot key. Interestingly, the Copilot key corresponds to the F23 key, a nod to the historical IBM keyboards that featured function keys ranging from F1 to F24. This opens up possibilities for users to bind not only other applications but also specific key combinations directly to the Copilot key, enhancing their productivity and tailoring their keyboard experience to their unique needs.
