Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27686 Adds New Power Mode Settings

18 Aug 2024

Streamlined Power Management

Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27686, recently unveiled in the Canary Channel, introduces a significant enhancement to the user experience by simplifying the process of adjusting power modes based on the laptop’s charging state. Previously, the Power & battery menu in Windows 11 allowed users to select only one power mode for their device, regardless of whether it was plugged in or running on battery. The new update now permits users to choose distinct power plans tailored to the laptop’s charging condition directly from the Settings menu.

While the capability to modify power settings based on charging status is not entirely new—existing in both Windows 10 and 11—previous methods required navigating through the Control Panel and locating the Power Options app. This involved several steps: selecting the desired power plan, clicking on Change plan settings, and then adjusting settings for the computer’s response to different power states. Additionally, users could delve into Change advanced power settings for more detailed control.

This complexity may pose challenges for average users, who might find it daunting to navigate through multiple windows just to change power settings. Therefore, the introduction of the ability to adjust power modes directly from the Settings menu is a welcome improvement for Windows 11.

For those participating in the Canary Channel and who have installed this Preview Build, the new options can be accessed by navigating to System > Power & battery within the Settings menu. However, it’s important to note that these features are currently exclusive to the Canary Channel, and their inclusion in the final Windows 11 update remains uncertain.

Microsoft’s efforts to enhance the user-friendliness of Windows 11 reflect a broader trend, particularly as younger generations increasingly rely on smartphones as their primary computing devices. These users are accustomed to the intuitive interfaces found on Android and iOS platforms. Nevertheless, Microsoft has wisely chosen to retain the Control Panel for the time being, recognizing the needs of power users who prefer to explore the intricacies of the operating system.

Additional Updates in Build 27686

Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that this Canary build also features an intriguing update: the FAT32 partition size has been increased to 2TB, a change that comes after nearly three decades of the format’s existence.
