Windows Server 2025 Streamlines Features in Latest Build 26244

06 Jul 2024

Windows Server 2025 is gradually streamlining its operating system by removing unnecessary elements. The latest Canary channel build, 26244, is set to eliminate the Get Started app and Nearby Share settings page.

This change was first noticed by Phantomocean3 after updating to the latest build. While this change is not automatically reflected in the new build, users can enable specific vivetool feature IDs to experience the removal of these apps and settings.

Windows Latest confirmed the changes after enabling the feature IDs. Following the update, the Get Started app no longer appeared in the Recommended section of the Start menu, nor could it be found in the All apps section.

Attempts to search for Nearby sharing in both the Start menu and Settings app yielded no results. Even the System section of the Start menu no longer includes the Nearby Sharing option.

Sign-in Alerts in the Start Menu

Previously, Windows Latest reported on sign-in alerts appearing in the Profile section of the Start menu, a change deemed unnecessary for Windows Server 2025 users who do not require a Microsoft Account.

In build 26244, the sign-in alerts did not appear post-installation. It’s worth noting that signing in with a Microsoft account was necessary to become a Windows Insider at a later stage.

Microsoft’s decision to introduce and subsequently remove Sudo from Windows Server 2025 also raised questions among users, as Sudo could have served a useful purpose on Windows Server PCs.
