VailuxOS, a Debian-based Linux distribution, provides Windows users with a familiar interface while maintaining stability and ease of use. This distribution, using KDE Plasma to emulate Windows, caters to users transitioning from Windows environments.
Core Features and Setup
VailuxOS offers a straightforward installation process and does not collect user data, prioritizing privacy. It includes access to APT repositories, with Flatpak support enabled by default in KDE Discover. Snap support is also available, though not initially activated. The desktop design features a centered application menu and a file manager, echoing familiar Windows elements.
Usability and Performance
The distribution simplifies network file sharing by providing GUI tools for Samba setups. Users can easily configure Samba shares, avoiding command-line complexities. One minor issue was the initial German keyboard layout—resolved by adding the US English layout via the system tray.
In performance testing, VailuxOS was run using Ollama with the llama3.2r local model in a virtual machine. Allocated 10 GB of RAM, the system handled typical queries and tasks reliably, although not at the top tier of speed benchmarks.
Comparison and Recommendation
While the author continues to recommend Zorin OS as the leading Windows-like Linux distribution, VailuxOS is highlighted as a strong alternative, ranking within the top five for users moving from Windows environments.
