Miyazaki Open to Elden Ring Adaptations Despite Storytelling Challenges

02 Jul 2024

During an interview with FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki, he made a surprising confession—he’s not the best at video games, and he’s not afraid to use every advantage available when playing Elden Ring, including the Mimic Tear. Despite his own struggles in The Lands Between, Miyazaki expressed openness to further adaptations of the game, whether that be in the form of a TV show or a movie.

“I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie, for example,” Miyazaki shared with The Guardian. “But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium. So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play. We’d have to build a lot of trust and agreement on whatever it is we’re trying to achieve, but there’s interest, for sure.”

Challenges and Opportunities in Adaptations

While Elden Ring already has numerous mangas offering different perspectives on the expansive story, the details of what a potential film or TV adaptation would cover are still uncertain. Some players have pointed out the challenges of adapting the game’s narrative, given its cryptic nature and reliance on player exploration to uncover its secrets.

Elden Ring's story is famously enigmatic, with much of the plot hidden in NPC quests and item descriptions scattered throughout the world. The mysterious storytelling approach has been a key part of the game’s appeal, and a straightforward adaptation might not capture the essence of the experience for players.

However, if the upcoming Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC marks the end of FromSoftware’s storytelling in this universe, fans can look forward to future projects that build upon the existing lore and expand the narrative in new and exciting ways.
