Meta Boosts Messaging Interoperability in EU with WhatsApp and Messenger

07 Sep 2024

Meta's Strategic Shift Under the Digital Markets Act

In a significant move prompted by the Digital Markets Act (DMA), Meta is set to transform the way its popular messaging platforms, WhatsApp and Messenger, interact with third-party messaging services. Over the weekend, the tech giant unveiled its plans to enhance interoperability, a feature that will soon allow users of compatible third-party apps to connect seamlessly with WhatsApp and Messenger users, albeit initially limited to the European Union.

As part of this initiative, Meta has introduced new notification systems within both Messenger and WhatsApp. These notifications will keep users informed about ongoing third-party chats and will also alert them whenever a new messaging app opts for interoperability. This proactive approach aims to ensure that users remain engaged and aware of their messaging options.

To facilitate a smooth transition, Meta has designed a user-friendly onboarding process. This feature will educate users about third-party chats and guide them through enabling this functionality. Users will have the flexibility to select which third-party applications they wish to receive messages from, as well as how they prefer to manage their inboxes.

Moreover, WhatsApp and Messenger users will have the option to organize their third-party chats according to their preferences. They can choose to keep these conversations distinct from their existing inbox or opt to merge them into a single, unified chat space. Importantly, these settings can be modified at any time, providing users with control over their messaging experience.

In addition to these organizational features, Meta plans to enrich the messaging experience further. Users can look forward to enhanced functionalities such as reactions, direct replies, typing indicators, and read receipts. Looking ahead to 2025, Meta has also announced plans to introduce group chats and enable voice and video calling between Messenger/WhatsApp and third-party messaging services, all in compliance with the DMA.

While a specific timeline for the rollout of these features remains undisclosed, Meta assures users in the European Union that these enhancements are on the horizon. As the company navigates this new regulatory landscape, stakeholders are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates regarding Meta’s interoperability initiatives.
