Facebook Messenger has introduced a feature called 'Secret conversation' that enhances user privacy through end-to-end encryption. This makes messages readable only by the participants involved. The feature is available exclusively for iOS and Android devices as of the current rollout.
Using the Secret Conversation Feature
To start a secret conversation in Messenger, users should begin by tapping the home icon within the app. Next, tap the '+' icon followed by the lock icon located at the top right of the screen. Then, select the contact you wish to message. For added privacy, users can tap the clock icon in the text box to set a timer, causing messages to disappear after a specified time.
Limitations and Privacy Considerations
It's important to note that secret conversations can only be initiated from the Messenger app and will not sync with conversations on Facebook chat or messenger.com websites. This feature is device-specific, meaning conversations appear only on the device they were created on and the device used by the recipient to access them. Despite encryption, there is still a possibility that recipients might share message screenshots.
Availability and Setup Details
Secret conversations are unique to the iOS and Android platforms, enhancing privacy measures on these devices specifically. Each participant in the conversation has a device key to ensure the encryption is verified, adding an additional layer of security to the messaging experience.
