Proton Mail Improves Apps for iOS, Android Users

25 Sep 2025

Proton Mail is taking significant strides by launching revamped versions of its iOS and Android apps, aiming to offer a modern, efficient interface. With email originally designed for desktop use, early mobile versions struggled with performance issues. Understanding the growing shift towards mobile internet usage, Proton dedicated the past year to rebuilding its apps from the core.

Revamped Mobile Experience

The newly released Proton Mail v7 shares a unified code base for both Android and iOS, enhancing development efficiency and ensuring that updates roll out simultaneously across platforms. The user interface is redesigned to be cleaner and more intuitive, with streamlined navigation that places essential functions within easy reach.

Among the standout features is a comprehensive offline mode. This allows users to access, manage, and compose emails without needing an active internet connection. Once connectivity is restored, any changes made offline are automatically synchronized. Such functionality underscores Proton Mail’s commitment to blending privacy with usability.

Community-Centric Approach

Anant Vijay Singh, product lead for Proton Mail, emphasized the role of community feedback in the development process. "Proton Mail has been built on community feedback, reflecting a model where users' needs take precedence over advertising interests," Singh noted. This philosophy empowers the design of the app, enabling a smoother, faster, and more privacy-focused experience.

By maintaining approximately 80 percent code parity between Android and iOS versions, Proton Mail facilitates faster development cycles. This design philosophy not only bolsters app performance but also sets the stage for future features, particularly in enhancing the Proton Calendar integration.

Rolling Out New Features

The refreshed apps are now available, with iOS users required to update manually via the App Store, while Android users will receive the updated version as distribution expands. This strategic rollout aligns with Proton Mail’s overarching goal to provide users with secure, efficient, and innovative email solutions.

As Proton Mail continues to evolve, its focus remains on improving user experience without compromising privacy. The redesigned apps reflect this dedication, illustrating what is possible when innovation is driven by user needs rather than commercial demands.
