Android is introducing a new hub for satellite-connected apps, enhancing connectivity and app integration. The update includes a Quick Settings tile and a Satellite connectivity page within Android.
Availability and Features
The Satellite tile has three states: On, Available, and Not available. It checks cellular plans for compatibility with carrier roaming NTN (Non-Terrestrial Networks). The connectivity page features a demo and a list of compatible apps.
- Devices with NB-NTN support: Emergency SOS, Messages, Find Hub, Maps, Settings.
- Devices with LTE-based NTN: AccuWeather, Emergency SOS, Google Maps, Messages, Weather, Personal Safety, Snapchat, WhatsApp, X.
Current Status and Future Plans
The Satellite tile appears in the latest Android Canary build but is currently behind a developer option. There is potential for general availability in future releases.
NB-NTN primarily supports emergency messaging and location tracking, while LTE-NTN can also handle texting and voice calls.
